I heard a sermon this week on Matthew 24 that got me thinking about how easy it is for us to miss the point.
When it comes to the end times, Christians have a lot of different opinions. Pre-trib, post-trib, pre-millennial, post-millennial, amillennial (apparently, I need to pick a Trib). You can get into some pretty deep conversations trying to figure out exactly how everything is going to happen.
And there is nothing wrong with studying the Bible and wrestling through those questions. We should know what we believe and why we believe it. Spoiler alert: that’s basically what Carry the Fire teaches. But we can spend so much time trying to figure out when and how Jesus is coming back that we forget the most important part: Jesus is coming back.
The question isn't whether you've got every detail of the end times figured out. The question is whether you know Jesus.
The picture that stuck with me is this: the door is closing. Right now, the invitation is still open. Jesus is calling people to Himself. But there will come a time when that door closes.
If you've already walked through that door, if you've surrendered your life to Jesus, then what are you doing with the time you've got left? Are you telling people about Him? Are you making disciples? Are you inviting the guy next to you to come meet Jesus?
I've heard the phrase, “Major in the majors and minor in the minors.” I think that applies here. There are things worth debating, and there are things worth dying on the hill for. But Jesus, the gospel, salvation, and the mission He's given us are the majors.
So let's not miss the point.
The King is coming. The invitation is open. And we've got work to do.
