The Elliptical

Nine years ago I started thinking that we Christian men need something more. More than what we’ve been offered. More than what others are settling for. The world tells men to go to work and to have a hobby. Golf, hunting, or working out are good choices. And maybe take your family to church on Sunday if you’re into that sort of thing.

But what about for men who truly want more from life? What about for men who want to be challenged? Men who want to come alive, workout in the cold, share real-life struggles, build real brotherhood, memorize scripture, grow stronger spiritually and physically - and have more than just surface-level drinking buddies and a boring workout on the elliptical.

Come to think of it, the elliptical is pretty much a metaphor for who I was before Men’s Alliance. The elliptical machine is indoors and comfy. You do it by yourself. And it’s going nowhere. You get on it and you simply repeat the same pattern over and over. All by yourself. Sure, you’ll appear to be doing all the right things, but it ain’t gonna change anyone’s life.

Maybe you can relate. Maybe you’ve gone through seasons on a spiritual elliptical too. Maybe you’re in one right now.

I thank God for Men’s Alliance and for all the men who’ve gotten off that repeat cycle of isolation and comfort and gotten real about becoming better husbands, fathers, and leaders.

Don’t let your buddies go through life on the elliptical. Help other men find the Tribal, Rugged, and Real!
