It’s a bit of a cliche but it’s come up several times in the past few weeks: I don’t have to do this, I get to do this.
That one small switch from “have to” to “get to” changes everything.
It’s easy to start viewing life as a bothersome chore. I have to take out the trash. I have to wash the dishes. I have to drive my kid 11 hours back to college. But this is no way to live.
The truth is that every day is a gift from God. Some people are in a hospital and would love to have the health to be at home washing dishes and taking the trash out. Having a kid in college is a blessing. So is having a car to drive them.
Our blessings are all around us once we train ourselves to see them.
We don’t have to get out of bed each day and go to work. We get to. We don’t have to read our Bible. We get to. We don’t have to rake leaves. We are blessed to have a yard with trees in it!
We don’t have to memorize Hebrews 12:1-2. And we don’t have to do burpees.
But thank God we get to do both!
Practice gratitude and watch how it changes everything.
