There is a new country song that asks a great question, “When you pass on, what ya gonna pass down?”
The song is about land that is passed down from one generation to the next.
It starts with John McArthur, who fed his family by working the land before he died. He was followed by his son, Junior, who was killed while serving his country and never met his own son, Jones. Now Jones says he tried very hard to teach his son, Hunter, why he shouldn’t sell, but Hunter could only see the dollar signs of a big deal.
Land is valuable yes, but as Christians, we have something of infinite worth. A saving faith in Jesus Christ.
Only about 10% of people have any detailed knowledge about their great-grandparents. We are forgotten so quickly.
So what are you passing down to your kids, grandkids and great grandkids?
Is it that you were really good at your job? or that you know all the first round draft picks in the latest NFL draft? or what your golf handicap was?
Our faith in Jesus is the most important thing that we can pass down to the next generation. Do they see you reading scripture? Do they hear you praying for them and with them? Do they experience His presence through your actions? What are you doing to pass down your faithfulness to family and a devotion to God to the next generation?
We will all pass on.
