Recently, I was at a somewhat formal event where I was asked the question what do you do? And to be honest with you, the question caught me a little off guard.
I know what he was asking, what do you do for a living? I’ve been asked this question hundreds of times in my life as I bet you have too. It’s a very surface level and safe question to ask someone.
One of the many things I love about Men’s Alliance is that we don’t stay on the surface, we get real. I can tell you a lot about the men in my tribe. I can tell you about the real world challenges that they are battling in their lives. I can tell you about those men who are fighting for their marriages, and those men who are struggling with anger, depression, or addiction. But for many of them, I couldn’t tell you how they earn a paycheck. And this speaks to the fact that Men’s Alliance cuts through the surface level small talk and gets right to the heart of issues that so many men face today.
I responded to the question with a typical response about working for a men’s ministry and shared a bit about Men’s Alliance. But after having a few days to think about it, I have a new answer to that question: I make disciples. This is our calling in Matthew 28. Making disciples is how we sharpen men at weekly tribe meetings, and is the purpose of our Carry the Fire training. That is what I do. I make disciples.
